I understand why you chose to use 13 stripes that directly reflects the flag, but perhaps simplifying it just to have the mark stand out a bit more. (sort of like Bank of America) But if you're set on using the 13 stripes, perhaps using a gradient effect of deeper tones to help mimic the illusion of a flag?
