Although the industry is slow, you might want to try and sell this to a builder. I could see it as a logo for a housing community, apartment complex, home builder, property developer... even landscaping and interior design. I have some contacts in this area. I'll feel them out. You should incorporate a %22kill fee%22 into your contracts from now on to help keep your clients on-track and dedicated to you (it also helps keep them honest). I usually will put a 50%25 kill fee clause in my estimates that the client would be legally obligated to pay out to me should they kill (or revoke) the project before it's complete. That way you're at least getting partially paid for the work you've done. Some designers even insist that they get the full amount as a kill fee - but it's hard to get clients to agree to those terms.

I require half upfront to pay for my design time before I get started (I try anyway, sometimes the creative juices flow too fast). Call it a deposit or kill fee or whatever%3B it is all those things. It comes down to not letting yourself work for free. It's a business, right? The client will understand. I also emphasize that all comps are owned, copyrighted by me until remainder, full amount is paid. Lastly, if they send me back to the drawing board to start over with comps, that costs them an additional amount (usually the same amount as half the original price again).

The deposit and kill fee are two completely different things. A designer should ALWAYS require at least half of the deposit up front, regardless of whether or not their instituting a kill fee. The kill fee acts as a guarantee that the designer won't be left holding the bag should the client decide to bail after signing the estimate.
