Description: BAHRAIN lifted the overall title yesterday as the 44th Asian Bodybuilding Championship came to an exciting finish at the Bahrain Cultural Hall near the National Museum in Manama. The hosts bagged 11 medals, including four gold, three silver and four bronze after fierce battles with some of the continent's top-class bodybuilders from 26 countries in Asia. Participants competed over 13 weight sections in yesterday's show, including 10 for men - 59kg, 55kg, 65kg, 70kg, 75kg, 80kg, 85kg, 90kg, 100kg and above 100kg. The remaining three were open events for the under-40 and under-50 masters besides an under-21 junior open class. Leading Bahrain's victory in the championship was former world champion Hussain Jassim who clinched two gold medals in the 80kg and under-40 masters events. Other Bahraini gold medallists were Sami Al Haddad who was crowned 100kg champion and Ammar Yasser who clinched top spot in the junior section. Yousef Abdulla, Arafat Yaqoob and Hassan Saleh took the silver each in the 55kg, 80kg and under-40 masters events, respectively. Bahrain's bronze were won by Abdulwaheb Al Asfoor who came third twice in the 85kg and under-40 Masters while compatriots Ebrahim Habib and Mohammed Rashid respectively took the 75kg and the juniors sections. The event was a crucial experience for all the participants to prepare for the 64th International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) Men's World Amateur Bodybuilding Championship, which will be held in Azerbaijan from November 3 to 8. The participants underwent the pre-judging last Tuesday, with the top six bodybuilders in each weight section qualifying for yesterday's show. The chief guest of the night was IFBB president Rafael Santonja who honoured the top three bodybuilders in each weight category during the prize-giving ceremony which took place right after the event. The event was also attended by president of the Bahrain and Asian Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Associations Shaikh Abdulla bin Rashid Al Khalifa, IFBB executive assistant Dr Adel Fahim and other senior bodybuilding officials.
