Upon first glance it reminds me of a piece of broccoli.**Something that may work well for paint and the 'big tree' idea would be the footprint of the trunk of a very large tree. It would look not only like the trunk imprint but also like a paint splatter. It would be close to what you have now but with a little more definition.
